The Historic Trail shares a trailhead with Peace River Trail. Anglers enjoy Peace River Trail for its destination at the confluence of Paynes Creek and Peace River. It is also possible to canoe the Paynes Creek up to Peace River and join the Peace River Canoe Trail, a 63-mile easy paddle through central Florida. Paynes Creek State Historic Site also offers a nice picnic area and a visitor center that depicts the story of the Seminole Indians during the 1800s. A 0.5-mile trail behind the visitor center leads to the high ground where Fort Chokonikla once stood.
