Named for Jacob Brown, a Brigadier General of the New York volunteers during the War of 1812, the county was established in 1839 when a portion of Schuyler County was ceded over.

Much of the county (and west central Illinois) was settled after the War by virtue of the U.S. government's Military Tract Land Grant program. About 3.5 million tilable acres were deeded as a reward to the veterans of the War.

The county seat is Mt. Sterling and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 6,918, an increase of 1,082 over the 1990 census.
