Schuyler County |
Schuyler county was created in 1825 from parts of Pike County and Fulton County. The final boundaries were set in 1839.
It is named for Philip Schuyler who was a Major General serving in the Revolutionary War and later a U.S. Senator from New York.
The county is located in rural western Illinois with the Illinois River serving as its eastern boundary. Weinberg-King State Park provides recreation for the area.
The county seat is Rushville, named in honor of Dr. Benjamin Rush, a renowned Philadelphia surgeon.
Historically significant buildings include the County Court House, built in 1881 and the Central Park Gazebo where Abraham Lincoln once addressed the town.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 7,496, a decrease of 2 over the 1990 census.
