Douglas County |
Founded in 1859, Douglas county is located in east central Illinois ESE of Decatur and is one of the smallest counties in the state at 410 square miles.
It is named for favorite son Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator that gained notoriety in the Abraham Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858.
This is an area populated by the Amish who are skilled furniture makers. Tuscola, the county seat, features a 100,000 sq. ft. indoor country village that replicates the Amish way of life.
Walnut Point State Park is located in the southeastern portion of the county and offers recreational opportunties to this rural area.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 19,872, an increase of 408 over the 1990 census.
