Edgar County

Edgar county is located in rural eastern Illinois on the Indiana state line and contains just under 650 square miles of acreage. It was formed in 1823 from parts of Clark County, which in turn was a spinoff of Crawford County, one of the original 15 Illinois counties.

The county is named for the Hon. John Edgar, one of three original judges in the county.

The county is known to geologists as fertile ground in which to find skeletons of the Mastadon era.

The county seat is Paris and the population on July 1, 1999, was 19,528, a decrease of 67 over the 1990 census. Paris is noted for Vance Park, a lavishly landscaped sunken garden and Lion's Head Fountain.
