Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum |
This museum was founded in honor of two famous Arctic Explorers, Admirals Robert E Peary and Donald B McMillan. In 1909 Peary became the first person to reach the North Pole, and MacMillan was one of his crew members. The collections at the museum contain equipment, paintings, photographs, and other materials relating to the history of exploration in the Arctic. Natural History specimens, artifacts, and drawings made by Inuit and Indians of Arctic North America are also included in the collection. Native Americans taken on MacMillan expeditions are featured with films and photographs. Robert Bartlett, an explorer who sailed the northern waters for almost fifty years, kept diaries, logs, and correspondence that is now featured in the Special Collections section of the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library.
