Auglaize county is located in western Ohio and calls Wapakoneta its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 47,167, an increase of 2,582 over the 1990 census.
The county, whose settlers began arriving shortly after 1830, was officially created in 1848 from portions of Allen and Mercer counties.
As an interesting side note, Mastadon bones were discovered at least three times between 1870 and 1880. Not counting the tusks or tail, the skeleton measured 19 1/2 feet long, the tusks measured 12 feet long and was estimated to be 13 to 14 feet high.
