Pickaway County |
Pickaway county, whose name is derived from the Native American word meaning "man risen from ashes", is located in central Ohio just south of Columbus with Circleville serving as the county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 53,431, an increase of 5,183 over the 1990 census.
The county was created in 1810 from portions of Ross, Fairfield, Hocking, and Franklin counties. Historical sites include the Arledge Mounds I and II and Mount Oval near Circleville and the Bazore Mill near Williamsport.
Natural features in the county include the Scioto River, which bisects the county from north to south; Deer Creek Lake and State Park in the southwestern section and Hargus Lake and A.W. Marion State Park to the east of the county seat.
