Shelby county is located in western Ohio west-northwest of Columbus and calls Sidney its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 47,949, an increase of 3,034 over the 1990 census. The county was formed in 1819 from part of Miami county and is named for Gen. Isaac Shelby, Revolutionary War hero and first Governor of Kentucky.
