Cherokee Oklahoma

Cherokee is located in northwestern Oklahoma in Alfalfa County (of which it is the county seat) northwest of Enid between Alva and Medford just south of U.S. Highway 64 west of Great Salt Plains Lake, Great Salt Plains State Park and the Great Salt Plains Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. For those desiring advanced education, the town is only about 20 miles east of Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

The Osage Indians colected salt here by brushing it up with turkey feathers. Today, the area attracts over 300 species of birds. The Eagle Roost Nature Trail provides magnificent birding opportunities. Museum buffs will enjoy the Alfalfa County Museum.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,578, a decrease of 209 since 1990.
