Shawnee

Shawnee is located in central Oklahoma in Pottawatomie County (of which it is the county seat) southeast of Oklahoma City along U.S. Highway 177 just south of Interstate 40 on the banks of the North Canadian River.

Area attractions include the Spanish-style Santa Fe Depot Museum with its impressive stone tower, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art on the campus of St. Gregory's University featuring the works of Whistler, Rembrandt and other masters, Bob Townsend's Classic Autos & Antiques, the Shawnee Mission Church, which was built in 1872 and is still in use today and the Potawatomi Tribal Museum.

Outdoor recreation is provided by Lake Thunderbird and Lake Thunderbird State Park west-southwest of town near Norman.

Post-high school education can be obtained at Oklahoma Baptist University.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 27,008, an increase of 991 since 1990.
