Beaufort Museum |
The Beaufort Museum is home to many relics of nature, war, and early industry. Once an arsenal, this building was constructed in 1798 of brick and tabby, a cement first made here by the Spaniards, who burned oyster shells to extract lime, then mixed it with sand and shells and shaped it in great wooden molds to form durable walls and pillars. The museum exhibits examples of this material, some in ruins, remaining along the coastlands.
The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 5:99 p.m. excluding Sunday and Wednesday.
