Tongass National Forest

This is the largest US national forest, covering 17 million acres in southeastern Alaska. It was created in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt and named after a clan of Tlingit Indians.

The forest includes more than five million acres of wilderness, including Misty Fiords National Monument and Admiralty Island National Monument. It consists mostly of islands and a the rugged shore of the Coast Mountains. Hunting and fishing licenses are required.

The USFS has many rental cabins in remote areas scattered throughout the region. For information and reservations, contact the USFS Information Center.
