Tongass National Forest |
This is the largest US national forest, covering 17 million acres in southeastern Alaska. It was created in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt and named after a clan of Tlingit Indians.
The forest includes more than five million acres of wilderness, including Misty Fiords National Monument and Admiralty Island National Monument. It consists mostly of islands and a the rugged shore of the Coast Mountains. Hunting and fishing licenses are required.
