Kobuk Valley National Park |
This 1,710,000 acre park is 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the Western Arctic National Parklands.
The Kobuk Valley is defined by the Baird Mtns to the north and the Waring Mtns to the south. The placid Kobuk River flows east to west.
The Great Kobuk Sand Dunes rise 100 feet within the park. The region is home to the Inupiat Indians, who are permitted to hunt and trap. The 500,000 caribou herd in the park is essential to their survival. Moose, bears, wolves and red foxes are also common.
The park is open year round. There are no trails, facilities or campgrounds.
