Palmer Alaska |
Palmer is located in Matanuska-Susitna Borough at the intersection of the Glenn Hwy/Tok Cutoff and Parks Hwy. It is the center of activity for the Matanuska and Susitna (Mat-Su) valleys. It was founded in 1916 as a stop on the Alaska Railroad.
The lush soil of the valley combined with the length of the growing season days make the area famous for its oversized produce. The Alaska State Fair runs the last 11 days in August each year.
The area is surrounded by the Chugach Mountain Range and Talkeetna Mountain Range. Hatcher Pass and the Matanuska Glacier are nearby. The log cabin Visitors Center is on S Valley Way at E Fireweed Ave.
