St Lazaria Island |
This 65 acre volcanic island, 15 miles southwest of Sitka was made a wildlife refuge in 1909 for the half million seabirds that breed here. Boat charters are available in Sitka for viewing the many species of birds, including puffins, murres, rhinoceros auklets, eagles, and storm petrels.
May and June are the best times to visit. For information, contact Refuge Manager, Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.
