Pirates in the old days, the era of Blackbeard, Bluebeard, Captain

Kidd and any number of guys nicknamed Peg Leg used St. Thomas

as a base from which to raid merchant ships of any and every

nation. They were after the gold and silver-laden ships enroute

to Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Spain.

Today, the historical significance of the pirates days live on

through the names of the hotels, restaurants and shops throughout

St. Thomas.
