A staircase `street` built by the Danes in the 1700s leads upto the residential area above Charlotte Amalie and Blackbeard's Castle Hotel. The castle's tower, built in 1679, was once used by the notorious pirate Edward Teach. Today, this lookout is at the center of a small hotel.
