Carbon County is in S central WY. Nearly 8,000 square miles. Natural resources include wool, beef, timber, jade, clays, oil, gas, and the high-BTU coal from which the county was named. The towns within the county include Saratoga, Rawlins, Encampment, Riverside, and Sinclair. The county also contains many attractions, like Seminoe State Park, the Medicine Bow National Forest, the Sierra Madre, and the North Platte River. The Red Desert also lies within the county. The highest elevations in the state are in the Medicine Bow Mountains and Snowy Range Scenic Byway. The best cattle raising areas in Wyoming are in the North Platte River region of central Carbon County.
The county seat is Rawlins. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 15,437, a decrease of 1,222 over the 1990 census.
