Wasco county was established in January of 1854 and is 2,396 square miles. The county seat is the city of The Dalles. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 23,346, an increase of 1,663 over the 1990 census. The development of the county has been related to the Oregon Trail and to the position of The Dalles as a crossroads for transportation.
