Crawford county was one of the first established in Illinois and as such, was immense. It included what is now
Cook County and about half of the area considered the "Northern Tier" and stretched southward to include present-day
Clay County,
Lawrence County,
Marion County and
Richland County. Its current boundaries now place the county along the banks of the
Wabash River.
Historical sites include the Fife Opera House in Palestine (erected in 1901), the Stoner site in Robinson (the county seat) and the Swan Island Site, an archaeological dig dating to 1000-1499 B.C.
Robinson is the home of Lincoln Trail College, offering extended education to county residents.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 20,854, an increase of 1,390 over the 1990 census.
