Cumberland county is located in central Illinois just to the northeast of the intersection of Interstate 57 and Interstate 70.
The county, established in 1843, is named for the Cumberland Road, which was influential in the settling of the Midwest. The road runs from Cumberland, MD to Vandalia and was known as the National Road and the National Pike. Today it is U.S. 40 and parallels I-70.
Historical sites include the Cumberland County Courthouse in Toledo (the county seat] and the Greenup Commercial Historic District. Greenup served 12 years as the first county seat.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 11,101, an increase of 431 over the 1990 census.
