Ross County |
Ross county is located in south central Ohio and calls Chillicothe, which served as Ohio's first Capital, its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 75,731, an increase of 6,401 over the 1990 census.
The county, formed in 1798 and named for James Ross, was one of the six original counties in the state and as such contained contained a vast amount of land. Serving as the state Capital from 1803 until 1816 (except from late 1809 to 1812 when the state legislature met in Zanesville), the county eventually gave up its mantle when Franklin county was formed and determined to be more centrally located. Today, the county contains an area of 687 square miles, the second largest in the state.
Recreational facilities around the county include Great Seal State Park, Tar Hollow State Park and State Forest in the eastern section of the county and Scioto Trail State Park and State Forest to the southeast.
