Nebraska's educational institutions provide a wide variety of organizations and services to accommodate all learning needs. Private and public schools serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as charter schools that are privately run with public money and exempt from many of the laws and the bureaucracy of the state education code.

Nebraska's 1,296 public schools consist of 598 districts, comprising elementary, middle, secondary and combination schools. The schools have significantly improved the quality of their assessments and increased student performance in reading, according to recent state accountability results. The Nebraska Department of Education provides assistance for schools to improve in specific areas of need as identified by state and federal assessments. The Catholic Church operates numerous schools in the state. For example, Marian High School in Omaha and Kearney Catholic High School in Kearney, excel in academics and sports.

Following high school, students can choose from public community colleges and universities. Private colleges and various technical training schools also are available.

Community colleges offer technical training in courses of two years or less and lower division transfer courses for those planning to transfer to a university to complete a bachelor's degree. There are 38 community colleges and technical schools in Nebraska.

Central Community College, located in southern Nebraska, is a popular learning institution offering three campuses in Columbus, Grand Island and Hastings. Western Nebraska Community College offers three campuses in Scottsbluff, Sidney and Alliance. Northeast Community College, situated in Norfolk along the Elkhorn River, also provides many continuing and transfer programs. Northeast awards two-year associate of arts, associate of science, associate of applied science and associate in nursing degrees, one-year diplomas and certificates.

The higher education system in Nebraska consists of state colleges and universities, private colleges and universities, community colleges, private career schools, trade schools, as well as barber and cosmetology schools.

The University of Nebraska has three locations, totaling the highest student population of all schools in the state. Campuses are located in Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney. All three colleges are in NCAA Division I athletics.

Situated along the Missouri River, the University of Nebraska Medical Center provides students with the largest teaching hospital in the state. This facility has one of the best medical resident programs in the nation.

A number of private colleges and universities are located in Nebraska. Bellevue University offers a large variety of bachelor degrees, as well as master's degrees in the arts, science and business administration. Creighton University, one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the nation, enrolls more than 6,000 students annually in nine schools and colleges, including medicine, dentistry and law. Concordia University, also a private college located in Seward, is owned and operated by The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The university is a coeducational institution of higher learning committed to the Christian growth of its students.

Such smaller state colleges in Nebraska as Peru State College, provide classes ranging from the liberal arts to business administration. Located in the city of Wayne and between Norfolk and South Sioux City is Wayne State College. They offer numerous courses in the arts, sciences and business.
