On the hill just above
Cruz Bay is the Enighed Estate Great
House, built in 1757. Enighed is the Danish word for `concord`,
meaning unity or peace. The great house and its surrounding
buildings (a sugar-production factory and horse-driven
mill) were destroyed by fire and hurricanes, and the house
sat in ruins until it was restored in 1982. Today it is home
to the library and museum and houses a small collection of
Indian pottery, colonial artifacts, and contemporary craft
work by local artisans. The library hosts occasional crafts
demonstrations and classes. Free. Open weekdays 9am-5pm.
