City Map with Features
Washington county is located in northeast Oklahoma on the Kansas state line with Bartlesville serving as the county seat. The only major waterway in the county is Copan Lake near the Kansas line. Just minutes west of the Osage County line, however, lie Lake Hulah and Wah-Sha-She State Park which provide many recreational opportunities for area visitors. The county has a particularly rich history in that the first commercial oil well in Oklahoma was brought in by the Cudahy Oil Company in 1897; the Frank Phillips Home, an elaborately restored 26-room mansion and home of the founder of Phillips Petroleum; Woolaroc and the Tom Mix Museum in Dewey are all located here. One interesting tidbit is that Dewey was the first town in Oklahoma to have electric lights, waterworks and a telephone line. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 47,674, a decrease of 392 over the 1990 census.
