Welcome to the Prehistoric Indian Village, a settlement of the first farmers of the Northern Plains.
Our story begins in the 10th century, when groups from the Mississippi River valley and eastern woodlands moved west onto the plains searching for new lands to settle and grow crops.
The site near Mitchell was one of several villages that the Native Americans established around 1000 AD. This site is well preserved because the land has not been plowed in modern times so the ground is relatively untouched and is amazingly rich with artifacts.
For whatever reason, these native people left their home, and when they departed they left behind their footprint on the prairie. Today scientists, students, and tourists can visit this "footprint" to gain insight into the past lives of the plains peoples.
